The Code of the Town of Elkton, Chapter 6.04.030 states: "No person owning, harboring, controlling or keeping any dog(s) shall deposit or permit the dog(s) to deposit fecal matter on any property not that of the owner or custodian." Failure to clean up after your dog is not just illegal and places you at risk for a fine; worse yet, you're leaving behind a veritable alphabet soup ranging from bacteria that can cause diarrhea and other health issues, to parasites such as hookworms and roundworms. These harmful organisms can remain on the ground for weeks. Think of your child on a playground or soccer field that contains dog feces. Now think of your child placing his or her hands near their eyes, in their mouths...not a pleasant picture. When we, or our children, step in a mess left behind by a dog - microscopic germs and parasite eggs can be transmitted to our shoes; (or worse, barefeet), carried into our homes, transferred to carpets, furniture and even our beds. Please be a responsible pet owner, and make sure your dog is always on a leash, and be sure to bring plastic bags to clean up after your dog, wherever you walk, including your neighborhood and our parks.
