Police Officer Positions

The Elkton Police Department (EPD) is a progressive, full-service agency committed to excellence in policing and service to the community. The selection and retention of qualified and highly motivated police officers are essential to the EPD mission. We seek individuals who can fit into an enthusiastic, achievement-oriented team committed to providing our town with excellence in policing.  You must be versatile and adaptable.  As a police officer you will interact with people in a wide variety of circumstances, which at times, may be highly unpredictable.  Good judgment and exemplary behavior are essential. 
 
The duties of a Police Officer are varied.  Your assignment may range from regular patrol to working on community problems such as youth gangs or drug violations in the neighborhood.  A significant part of police work is community relations, and a large percentage of a Police Officer's time is spent dealing directly with citizens.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Age 21
  • U.S. Citizen
  • High School Diploma, GED or High School Equivalency Diploma
  • Valid Drivers License
  • High Moral Character
  • Good Physical Condition
  • Good Communication Skills
  • Self-initiative

Selection Process:

  • Submit an Application
  • Pass a written police-oriented test
  • Pass a physical agility test, consisting of timed pushup/situps, sit and reach and a 1.5 mile run
  • Interact with Oral Review Board
  • In-depth background investigation
  • Medical, psychological and polygraph exams
  • Drug Screen

Already Certified?

    Applicants who are already certified are exempt from the written exam and the physical agility test portion of the selecton process.

 

Initial Training

Non-certified Police Officers will attend a 26-week law enforcement training academy.  Certified Police Officers (out of state) will attend a 6-week Maryland Comparative Compliance training course. Officers will receive a salary during training.
